Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is convinced it will be solved – and – Manchester United are calm – but that the stage at elsewhere is drawing closer.
The failure to announce a new contract for the Spanish goalkeeper, with is creating unease among the club’s support.
There are several twists in the narrative of the potential of De Gea within the two decades. It seemed at one stage he was committed to stay.
Yet after United created their offer, the feeling from the team and the player’s camp was one of optimism. A very strong belief was that discussions would be concluded following the final tour of Asia and Australia.
There’s still no official confirmation of a deal, Fourteen days after United returned to Manchester. On 1 January, De Gea – authorized by Atletico Madrid for #18.9m in 2011 – will probably be free to sign pre-contract conditions with any club out England.
“I’m pretty confident we’ll get this sorted,” explained Solskjaer.
“David hasn’t , ever said to me something other than he loves the clubhas had a fantastic time and would like to stay. So let’s just hope we get it done over the line”
His awards can measure the worth to Manchester United of de Gea. The goalkeeper won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award several times in five seasons between 2014 and 2018.
De Gea is still one of the few genuinely world-class players, although he may have lost his place at the Spain team to Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Any replacement would certainly reflect a regression though Solskjaer feels he has cover, if the goalkeeper were to leave. Currently, the manager has Argentina Lee Grant as his choice Sergio Romero as second choice, and the England Under-21 keeper Dean Henderson, who is out on loan.
“I’ve got two very good back-up keepers here and Dean is currently in Sheffield United,” Solskjaer stated. “General, the goalkeeping section is in good health.”
When De Gea came at Old Trafford, United had won the Premier League and chose a Champions League final appearance in four seasons, losing to Barcelona in Wembley.
The slip since has been important.
After the failed tenures of Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes, Solskjaer was brought in to reconnect the club.
Solskjaer says he views United as”the biggest and greatest club in the world”. Yet there is a clear gap between that view and the reality.
On Saturday, United host a Leicester side that are above them. The visitors, under the management of all Brendan Rodgers, do not have the diversion of a campaign and appear well set to struggle for a place.
United are actually finding it harder to attract star names than they did during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time. The loss of De Gea – to Juventus, Paris St-Germain or some other club would be a blow to their prestige.
For now, that is something Solskjaer is unwilling to think about.
Asked if maintaining De Gea are an announcement, the Norwegian explained:”Yes, undoubtedly.
“We got used to having the top keepers here;: [Peter] Schmeichel, [Edwin] Van der Sar, De Gea. We want the best ones. We wish to build a winning team , to challenge for the greatest prizes”
