The fastest male skaters from the world converge on Gangneung Ice Arena next week as part of this always-entertaining short-track speed skating contest. The server side is expected to be well-represented on the podium, with a set of gold-medal contenders from the respective events and overwhelming chances for a Top-2 lead to this 5,000-metre relay race.
Hwang and Lim are their country’s best shot at men’s speed skating gold and they both have big shoes to fill, as South Korea has won five of their previous seven Olympic titles at the 1,000-metre occasion and 2 of four gold awards from the 1,500-metre contest. Knegt gave the Netherlands its just 1,000-metre medal in Olympic history with a third-place revealing in Sochi four years ago.
It should come as no surprise that the Korean relay team would be the gold-medal favorite. It hasn’t struck gold because the 2006 Games in Turin and didn’t even get to the podium in Russia. The Canadian group is also looking to come back to the podium after settling for a win in the B final four years back. The U.S. is coming off a second-place result in Sochi but is a longshot here.
